I don’t know about you, but to me, it feels like “I’m On A Boat” is such an old song. People aren’t talking about it anymore, people aren’t remaking it anymore. If that’s the case, then why did I bother doing this now? Honestly, I came up with the idea to rewrite “I’m On A Boat” like… not long after it first aired on Saturday Night Live… and so did a lot of other people. Go to YouTube and search for “I’m On A…” and you’ll get a million different results. But it’s a song that just screams parody and even though there were plenty of other people around the web doing it, I wanted to try it too… for two main reasons: 1. to make a video that isn’t me running around filming my friends, but one that requires acting, editing, and legit work. And 2. to re-live some of the whole CTV: Musical 2 experience ;)

I rewrote the song to “I’m In A Cab” sometime in like April. Once I got Mike on board, we recorded the song and filmed everything with the two of us in it sometime in May. Then it all just stopped. I had finals, then came home for a week, then went back for a 6-week summer course and “I’m In A Cab” just sat on the back burner. The worst part was that MOST of it was done! All that it really needed was the stuff actually inside of a cab. I thought about just waiting until September and filming it then when I’d be back in the city, but by then, “I’m On A Boat” would be EVEN OLDER making “I’m In A Cab” that less funny. I even thought about getting a cab down by the beach in Miami or something, but it would clearly be Miami outside… not New York. So today, July 18, 2009, I did my best of turning my Mazda3 sitting in the driveway of my suburban Fort Lauderdale neighborhood into a cab in the middle of New York City.

Today, was the Q&A / Autograph signing with The Lonely Island from SNL at the Virgin Megastore in Union Square. (See a couple posts down for how I got to go.)

So I get there, get a pretty good spot in the crowd, up pretty close, when the surprise guest host comes out… PAUL RUDD! Nobody was expecting that… but it was awesome. I know him best as “Mike” from FRIENDS, but he’s been in all kinds of stuff including a new movie with Andy Samberg called I Love You Man coming out next month (I think?).

Anyway, I was able to film the Q&A… so I’ll post a video of that soon… but what I didn’t get to film was the best part: MEETING THE LONELY ISLAND.

So I waited in line for like 482 hours after the Q&A to get an autograph and when I finally made it up the table, I met Kiev first. He was really cool, and asked me my name. So I told him “Dean,” which I guess Andy Samberg (who was sitting next to him) really liked… because he started shouting it… like legit shouting it… like Travis in CTV last year: “Deeeeeean! Deeeeeean! Deeeeeean!” It was hilariously awesome. So they all finish signing, I say thanks, and as I’m walking out the door of Virgin, Andy starts screaming at me again, “Deeeeeeeeeeeean!!! Deeeeeeeean!” Andy Samberg likes my name!

This long weekend has brought with it some amazing opportunities… and as corny as that sounds, it’s true. Fo realz, yo.

Here’s what’s coming up:

As I posted yesterday, I’m going to a taping of The Late Show with David Letterman on Thursday! (SKIPPING CLASS! WOO!)

Then, next Wednesday, The Lonely Island (you know, Andy Sanberg and the guys from SNL who do those ridiculous songs/videos like “Jizz In My Pants”) are coming to Virgin Megastore Union Square (one block from my dorm!) for an exclusive Q&A plus autograph signing for people who bought the CD there… which I ran out and did last night. (Check out “I’m On a Boat” a few posts down.)

THEN, as I so subtly threw into that last post, I’m going to see a taping of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on June 9th… with David! (…if he gets his ass up to NYC.)

Living in New York has suddenly gotten a lot cooler ;)
